2D Animation Sequence

2D Animation Sequence

I am making a 15 second animation sequence for my assignment. I will use Adobe Flash to create the animation. I have been looking at existing animations on the internet to get ideas for my own.

This is an example of one of the animations I have looked at to help me generate ideas for my own.

I also looked at the game pacman, this helped me come to the conclusion that pacman would make a good animation as it somewhat simple but also not boring.

I have started planning my 2D animation, I will use Adobe flash and make a pacman animation, in which pacman will move around the stage, flapping his mouth open and closed, while eating pills and being chased by ghosts.

I have looked on google for a suitable image to use as a background for my animation, I have chosen to use a classic pacman style background to fit with my animation.

I have started a new file in Adobe Flash and have imported the image I took from google into it. I then renamed this layer as 'stage' and locked it so that I don't accidentally move it.

I have used the paint tool to put in the coloured circles for the pacman character to eat, like in the classic game. To make it appear as if he is eating them I will simply remove them once he passes so they will no longer be in the animation.

I have added the pacman image to use in the animation. I have added both an image of his mouth open and an image of his mouth closed, I will switch between the two images in each keyframe to make it appear as if his mouth is actuallly opening and closing.

I have added the images of the ghosts that will chase pacman now. Since the ghosts have very little animation all I will do is move them a certain number of times in a desired direction each keyframe.

I have begun to animate it now, I have done this by switching between the image of the closed mouth pacman and the image of pacman with his mouth open in each keyframe and moving him a certain amount each frame too. I have also animated the ghosts, this has been achieved by simply moving them a certain amount in each keyframe. The yellow dots have also been made to disappear once the pacman image moves over them, I have done this by deleting them from the animation once he has crossed over them.

I have finished the animation itself now, the animation ends with the pacman character being caught by one of the ghosts, I had initially wanted to make the animation longer but due to time constraints I had to make it shorter than I intended. I also discovered that the animation went a little too slow, I decided ton resolve this problem by editing it in premiere pro, this would make my animation even shorter but once the appropriate titles are added it should be above the minimum length required.

I have looked on youtube and found a video with the ideal music and sounds for my animation.

I then used an online video converter to convert the video into an mp3 file so that I could put it into premiere pro with my animation and edit it together.

I have uploaded both the animation and the audio into premiere pro and edited it otgether so that the audio appears at the right time and fits with the animtion, I have alos made the animtion faster by raising the frame rate.

I have added in the necessary titles to the animation including my name and the name of my animation. I chose to make the titles yellow and in the font Forte because it matches the theme of my animation and yellow is the colour of pacman. By adding in these titles my animation has now met the minimum time required from it.

I have uploaded my finished animation onto vimeo.

My animation was a total of 24 seconds long, this meant that it was above the minimum required time of 15 seconds, in my animation i tried to follow the pacman game as closely as possible, I did this by gathering sounds from the game and using the characters from the game. The audio used was appropriate. I did however run into some issues when I was making this animation. One such problem was the stage size in flash, the stage itself was too large and the animation itself only took up a small portion of it, I tried solving this in flash but kept running into various issues so I decided to try an fix it in premiere pro. I was able to get rid of the rest of the stage, however the animation stayed the same size which meant that the animation only took up a portion of the screen. Another issue I ran into was that my animation moved too slowly, this could be because I kept the keyframes too far apart instead of moving the characters small distances between closer keyframes.
